Weekend Box Office Report: Angel Has Fallen holds first place!

Gerard Butler keeps gunning for #1!

For a second weekend, the R-rated action-thriller ANGEL HAS FALLEN took the top of the box office with an estimated $11.5 million!

The third movie revolving around Gerard Butler's Secret Service agent Mike Banning dropped by 46% over the typically slow Labor Day holiday weekend, bringing it to a ten-day domestic total of $40.6 million.

The $40 million sequel with Butler's presidential protector marks the actor's first time hanging on to #1 for two consecutive weekends since the 2006 release of the Zack Snyder-directed Spartan epic 300.

The R-rated comedy GOOD BOYS stayed in second place with $9.1 million, giving the party-seeking lads a domestic total of $56.1 million after three weekends. The Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg-produced movie has a worldwide total of $70.2 million on a reported $20 million cost.

Disney's PG-rated update of THE LION KING crawled up to third place with $6.7 million as the majestic cat has reached a domestic total of $520.9 million. Director Jon Favreau's lifelike animation has a worldwide total of $1.56 billion, overtaking the $1.51 billion global finish of Marvel's THE AVENGERS to become the seventh-biggest worldwide release in history.

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW was in fourth place with $6.2 million. The Jason Statham/Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson spinoff has pounded its way to $157 million domestic over five weekends (coasting past the $$155 million finish of 2009's FAST AND FURIOUS), and has driven to a worldwide total of $684 million on a reported $200 million cost.

The faith-based drama OVERCOMER was in fifth place with $5.7 million, down by 30% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $17.5 million on a reported $5 million cost.

Remaining in sixth place was the R-rated horror-thriller READY OR NOT with $5.6 million. Samara Weaving's blood-soaked wedding night has a 12-day domestic total of $20 million, on a reported cost of $6 million.

In seventh place was the PG-13 horror movie SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK with $5 million. After four weekends, producer Guillermo del Toro and director Andre Ovredal's $28 million adaptation of the creepy Alvin Schwartz books has a domestic total of $57.6 million and $85 million worldwide.

Swinging back onto the list in eighth place was SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME with $4.2 million. The "extended cut" release (around four extra minutes) of the $160 million Sony-distributed sequel helped carry Marvel's wall-crawler to a domestic total of $384.7 million and $1.12 billion worldwide, placing it just short of fellow superhero CAPTAIN MARVEL's global tally.

In ninth place was the PG-rated Nickelodeon cartoon adaptation DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD with $4.1 million. The $49 million live-action adventure has a domestic total of $49.5 million and a worldwide total of $75.2 million on its fourth weekend.

Closing out the list was THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 with $4.1 million as the animated sequel has gathered $33.9 million domestic and $93.7 million worldwide, on a reported $65 million cost.

Outside the chart, Quentin Tarantino's comedy-drama ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD headed into the sunset (with $283 million worldwide so far).

The PG-13 feel-good comedy THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON with Shia LaBeouf and newcomer Zack Gottsagen added 250 more screens for a $2.9 million weekend and a domestic total of $7.9 million.

The new David Oyelowo thriller DON'T LET GO was released on 993 screens for an opening weekend of $2.4 million. The R-rated mystery didn't really satisfy critics, who gave it a 43% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review from Sundance is HERE).

In limited release, the fact-based drama OFFICIAL SECRETS from director Gavin Hood (ENDER'S GAME, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) opened with an adequate $20k per-screen average. The R-rated story of a British intelligence specialist (Keira Knightley) with inside info on the 2003 Iraq invasion currently has an 80% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Next weekend gets September going with Stephen King's menacing clown in the R-rated horror sequel IT CHAPTER TWO.
