What did you think of…X-Men: Apocalypse?

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

The X-Men saga continues this week with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, the sixth film in the mainline franchise and fourth that director Bryan Singer is at the helm. Continuing the journey where X-MEN: FIRST CLASS began and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST began/ended/projected forward, the latest entry focuses on the "first mutant" known as Apocalypse (as played by Oscar Isaac) who awakens from a long slumber to destroy the status quo and rebuild a mutant strong world. Of course, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) aren't having it and seek to confront Apocalypse and his "four horsemen" that include Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and usual big bad, Magneto (Michael Fassbender). Joining Professor X and Mystique are new and returning characters, including Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Quicksilver (Evan Peters) and Moira McTaggert (Rose Byrne).

Reviews have been mixed with many critics not digging the latest entry and currently hovering at a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own Eric Walkuski gave it a 6/10, saying "if you really enjoyed the last two films, you'll likely find plenty to appreciate in APOCALYPSE, even though its villain is a drag and the heroes are going through the motions once again." Chris Bumbray gave the film a 7/10, saying "APOCALYPSE is in its best moments, a good time at the movies and nowhere near the nadir of a series that’s seen some really bad entries." Personally, having seen the film twice, I quite enjoyed it overall and think it ranks among the best of the series, alongside X2: X-MEN UNITED and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (still the best of the series). It's certainly got flaws, but felt like the most comic book-y of the series and left me excited with where they could go next.
