What to Stream this Weekend

January 13-15

Velma (HBO Max)

There has been some backlash against the changes Mindy Kaling has made to the nerdy character from the Scooby Gang, but I think Velma looks like a lot of fun. Similar to the Harley Quinn series, this looks like an adult blast full of humor and revisionist changes to a long-running character. Check this out and give it a chance.

Hunters (Prime Video)

The second and final season of this Jordan Peele-produced exploitation series takes things from the realm of being based on a true story into a crazier world where Hitler is alive. It is a nuts story but one that absolutely changes the game of where this story went in the first season. Very cool, very violent ad a lot of fun, this season is good but shorter than I hoped.

Servant (AppleTV+)

The final season of this M. Night Shyamalan thriller series raises the stakes in a way I was not prepared for. Things are crazier than they have been before but the scope gets bigger as well as tighter at the same time. Everyone is at the top of their game here from an acing vantage as the series channels horror classics like Misery and Rosemary’s Baby as this forty chapter saga begins its final push to what I hope is a shocking conclusion.

Skinamarink (Shudder)

Everyone is talking about this low-budget Canadian horror film as this generation’s Blair Witch Project. While this is in some theaters this weekend, it is debuting to a wider audience on Shudder. I am definitely watching this over the weekend and I hope I get little sleep because of it.

Sick (Peacock)

Another horror movie, this pandemic thriller debuts on Peacock and brings a nasty look at COVID. This is a horror movie through and through, but as sick as you might be of being reminded about the coronavirus, this is a solid and efficient scary movie that will surprise you.

The Last of Us (HBO)

One of the most acclaimed video games of all time comes to a wider audience as one of the best television series in a long time. Led by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, this series will please fans of the games as it remains very faithful while expanding the story even more. Excellent special effects and great drama make this a series you have got to watch.

Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount+)

Taylor Sheridan’s Michigan set series returns for a second season. Jeremy Renner leads the show that blends elements of The Wire, Oz, Sons of Anarchy and the pulpy drama of Yellowstone. Picking up right where season one left off, this drama has some intense violence in the first two episodes that will shock many folks.

Your Honor (Showtime)

The second and final season of this Bryan Cranston-led drama continues the story of the New Orleans judge who learns his son’s murder was orchestrated by a mob kingpin. I was surprised by how good the first season was even though I should have trusted anything Cranston stars in. I hope this second season is just as good as the first.
