When they’re not constantly rolling out music video after music video, MTV is sometimes dabbling in the world of reality t.v. Just dabbling mind you, it’s mostly music videos ‘round the clock over there.
Now they’re taking a break from the nonstop reign of music video lunacy with some dramatic t.v. shows, both in the thriller/horror genre.
One is called DARIUS, and is described as “a thriller that explores the dark, secret life of an all-American teenager.” It will employ a combination of traditional narrative and multimedia elements (which to me says we can expect plenty of web blogging from the dark and broody Darius.)
The other project sounds like a bit of fun. CHEERLEADER CAMP (guess where it’s set) is described as HEATHERS meets SCREAM. So it will be a serious, non self-referential exploration of the tribulations of being – ah who am I kidding, it’s gonna be as cheesy as parmesan – and twice as sexy.
If there’s one thing MTV knows, it’s exploitation. It’s just usually of another, more insidious variety. Now they’re trying their hand at the exploitation genre, and I can’t think of a better angle than this one. Cheerleaders are our nation’s treasure – and most our respected athletes – and it’s about time someone knocked them off their golden pedestal.
