Kaci Walfall is getting powered up in the new first-look trailer for The CW‘s Naomi. Hailing from Ava DuVernay alongside Arrow writer and co-producer Jill Blankenship, Naomi tells a different kind of superhero story set in the DC Universe. Based on the comic series from Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker, and artist Jamal Campbell, the Naomi trailer focuses on Falwall’s journey toward becoming so much more than she ever thought she’d be after discovering her energy-based powers. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

After starring in her own solo comic book series, the hero known as Naomi McDuffie joined the Justice League. She was then given the name Powerhouse by Aquaman. DC Comics recently announced Naomi Season Two, a six-issue miniseries by Brian Michael Bendis, David S. Walker, and Jamal Campbell. The upcoming series follows the teen hero in her most challenging journey yet, as she tries to uncover the truth behind her family’s legacy. The new series will feature other characters from across the DC Universe, such as Superman, Black Adam, and the villain Zumbado.

In the new Naomi trailer, we find the young hero grappling with her new reality as a superpowered teen. With new threats closing in, a Scooby-Doo-like mystery to solve, and the pressure of everyday adolescence baring down, Naomi’s life gets overwhelmingly extra as she attempts to navigate uncharted waters. Will she be able to break free from the undertow? I certainly hope so.

During the events of the show, Naomi will cross paths with Akira (Law & Order: SVU’s Stephanie March) and Zumbado (Hap and Leonard’s Cranston Johnson), who plot to draw the teen into their manipulative and tangled web. Additionally, Alexander Wraith (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) plays Dee, a tattoo parlor owner who holds a few answers to Naomi’s mysterious origin. In other words, Dee’s got some explaining to do. I have a feeling that Naomi will be all ears when the time comes.

The CW premiere for Naomi falls on January 11, 2022.
