Neill joins Daybreakers

Straight from Cannes comes the news that Sam Neill will be joining Ethan Hawke in the Spierig Brothers’ vampire flick DAYBREAKERS.

In the year 2017, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the dominant plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher (Hawke) works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save the human race.

While I didn’t think the Spierigs’ previous film UNDEAD was particularly good, I appreciated how inventive some of it was, as well as the bros’ willingness to drop everything but the kitchen sink into their wacky low-budget zombie flick. I’m interested to see what they do with their sophomore effort. Hopefully they’ve gotten some of the silliness out of their system (as well as crafted a tighter screenplay than their previous one), and now armed with a bigger budget and some cool actors, are ready to fulfill their obvious potential.

NOTE: Pic above is from my favorite Neill performance, in John Carpenter’s IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.
