Netflix conjures 16 additional episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Last October Netflix debuted the first season of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA, and thus unleashed their latest big, fat, magical hit. Audiences were enthralled, and social media was ablaze, meaning Netflix wasn’t going to waste any time rolling out more of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), and now they’ve gone beyond a second season order by adding an additional 16 episodes to their docket, making up parts 3 and 4.

Netflix put out a press release this morning announcing the plans to shoot the additional episodes next year after the debut of Part 2, which is set for next April. This comes on the heels of this month’s holiday special, CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA: A MIDWINTER’S TALE, which finds Sabrina dealing with some Christmas evil. The 16 episodes will be split down the middle with eight episodes making up both parts 3 and 4.

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa put out a statement with the releasing, praising the Dark Lord for this early Christmas gift.

“Praise Satan! I’m so grateful to my partners at Warner Brothers, Netflix, Berlanti Television, and Archie Productions for supporting this darker vision of the world’s most famous teen witch. And I’m thrilled to be continuing to tell Sabrina's chilling adventures with our incredible cast and crew, led by the unstoppable Kiernan Shipka.”

The first season of the show centered on the young witch as she grapples with her dual lives — one lived as a witch and the other as a normal girl with a normal boyfriend at a normal school. The season finds her trying to have the best of both worlds and dealing with all manner of evil and darkness along the way. Taking a much, much darker and more adult route than the 90s outing, the show succeeded at creating a sort of modern-age BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER with a charming lead at the center and tons of sinister goings-on, creating a world of witchcraft worthy of exploring further as Sabrina hopefully goes toe-to-toe with the big man himself, Satan.

With the first season ending things on a somewhat unexpected note, I really am looking forward to seeing what the showrunners conjure up next (get it?). The tone is dark and the show isn't afraid to get grim, but it's still sweet and funny thanks to Shipka's work as Sabrina. Like STRANGER THINGS Netflix knows they have a hit on their hands, so we can expect to see a lot more witchcraft in the coming year.
