Netflix to conjure The Witcher Saga for a new fantasy TV series

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Alright, all of you Gwent enthusiasts! It's time to shuffle your cards, sharpen your swords, and prepare your deadliest of magic spells, because the smoke on the street is that Netflix is gearing up to develop and produce a new TV show based on THE WITCHER SAGA, the eight-novel, high-fantasy series by Andrzej Sapkowski that inspired the hugely popular CD Projekt Red RPG games!

While preparing to serve as the project's creative consultant, Sapkowski expressed his enthusiasm to participate in the making of the adaptation in a press release by stating, "I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories. Staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing." In Witcher game-related news, it's been said that Tomas Baginski – who directed the intro films for all three games in series – will direct one episode per season, at the very least.

No specific stories from the novels have been chosen for the adaptation at this time, though executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown have said, "The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.” Furthermore, Platige Image, a Polish production and visual effects house will co-produce the series.

Anyone who has read THE WITCHER SAGA novels, or has indulged in THE WITCHER video game series, will attest to how branching and robust the narrative threads are throughout the magic-laden adventures contained within. It's with this in mind that executive producers Baginski and Jarek Sawko said, "There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

As of this time, no release date, casting announcements, or additional directorial choices have been unveiled for THE WITCHER SAGA, though one can expect to hear more about this potentially exciting series real soon. In the meantime, why not pick up the novels, or play THE WITCHER: WILD HUNT on your Playstation 4, Xbox One, or PC?
