Back when THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was making millions upon millions of moolah (which was in 1999 – fuck I’m getting old), there was talk of both a sequel and prequel to the smash hit. Of course, a sequel did indeed come out, but it was hardly the follow-up most of us were hoping for. (Despite the fact that it does have a few good ideas of its own.)
But what of the prequel? You’d figure that the creators would throw us at least one more BLAIR WITCH flick, considering the original is the most profitable movie of all time. (Budget: $22 grand. Gross: $248 million worldwide.) Well, could just be that one will eventually see the light of day. Daniel Myrick spoke with Showbiz Spy about the possibility of taking another trip through the woods:
“Myself and the producer, Gregg Hale, have been talking and revisiting the idea behind a prequel that explores the original story and mythology of Blair Witch folklore…Ultimately the decision is up to Lionsgate, which owns the rights to the project and whether or not they want to take the leap with us… But we’re developing some ideas and exploring some storylines that we like, and checking out some locations. We’d like to do one. It would be great.”
Let’s face it, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths, and yet it is still regarded as a modern day horror classic (I personally have found that it really has no replay value all these years later). A prequel would most likely not cost a whole lot of money, and Myrick has sharpened his skills as a filmmaker (his latest, THE OBJECTIVE, is a decent little flick) as has his co-director Eduardo Sanchez. No word if the two plan on collaborating again, but it certainly wouldn’t be bad news. When it comes down to it, I’d see a new BLAIR WITCH movie. Would you?
