New Charlie’s Angels movie in development at Sony

Here we go again. According to THR, Sony Pictures is once more attempting to revive the Charlie’s Angels franchise. At this point, you have to wonder: how many times has this property been rebooted? The studio is developing a new Charlie’s Angels movie and has tapped Pete Chiarelli (The Proposal) to write the script.

Charlie’s Angels Has a Long History of Reboots

The original Charlie’s Angels series aired on ABC from 1976 to 1981, starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith as private investigators working for the Townsend Agency. Their unseen boss, Charlie Townsend, famously delivered assignments via speakerphone. Over the show’s five-season run, several other Angels joined the team, including Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts.

Sony first brought the Angels to the big screen in 2000 with a glossy, big-budget adaptation starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. The film was a major hit and led to the 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

The franchise returned to television in 2011 with a rebooted series that was cancelled after just seven episodes, a run so brief that many viewers barely noticed it existed, myself included.

Sony tried again in 2019 with another theatrical reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, but this time audiences didn’t show up, and the film fizzled at the box office.

Now… Sony is ready to give it another go.

Kristen Stewart Hated Making the Reboot

The last Charlie’s Angels reboot was written, directed, and produced by Elizabeth Banks, who also appeared as Bosley. As I mentioned above, the film wasn’t received well, and even some of the cast didn’t have a great time, including Kristen Stewart.

After recalling a line of dialogue from the opening scene (Did you know that it takes men an additional seven seconds to perceive a woman as a threat compared to a man?), Stewart admitted she hated making the film.

This was a mouthful at the time,” Stewart said. “I remember saying that. That was from a little film called Charlie’s Angels. We wanted a strong opener, you know? We wanted to really like broadcast what the movie was about. It was a good idea at the time. I hated making that movie. I don’t know what else to say to you.” However, Stewart is a fan of the original Charlie’s Angels movie starring Diaz, Liu, and Barrymore. “Honestly, the three…you can’t touch [that],” Stewart said. “Cameron, Lucy and Drew…I love that movie. I love that movie! If that says anything.

Are you down for another new Charlie’s Angels movie?
