New Line set to re-solve 70s murder mystery The Last of Sheila

Nice, I love me a good murder mystery!

THR has it that New Line is in the biz of remolding the 1973 murder-mystery THE LAST OF SHEILA, currently out to find a writer to adapt the Herbert Ross film. Beau Flynn and his FPC banner will produce the remake. Strangely, the original was written by Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim. No, really!

The puzzle-minded movie is set on a yacht that’s cruising the Mediterranean and whose owner, a wealthy Hollywood producer, has invited a group of his friends to join him a year after his wife is killed in a hit-and-run accident. While the guests have been ostensibly invited to take part in a mysterious scavenger hunt — Perkins and Sondheim enjoyed devising such games — the vacation quickly turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse exercise as secrets are revealed.

Sounds aces to me, as it’s one of my favorite subgenres. Hell, CLUE is one of my all time favorite movies, this coming from a dude who lambastes the notion of board-game movies. Fingers crossed SHEILA lives up to not just CLUE, but it’s own original cult status.

Think it will?
