I think I’ve mentioned before that Danish director Lars Von Trier is essentially a troll filmmaker. I really don’t think that’s too off the mark. But what I love about the guy – apart from his films which I think are great – is that he’s obviously got a weird and twisted sense of humor that he’s not afraid of putting on display.
I feel that that’s clearly in evidence today with the appearance of a new set of character posters for his latest film MELANCHOLIA. Von Trier obviously told someone “F*ck you, I’m doin’ it cuz I can!” and actually inserted himself in one of the film’s posters. And strangely enough, it’s totally apropos. The biggest character in any Von Trier film is most certainly always Von Trier. I love it.
MELANCHOLIA opens in limited release on November 11th.
Synopsis: In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgard) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth…
