The New Mutants gets a release date, until it is inevitably delayed again

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

…sigh…

Okay, so, not to sound too cynical, but this is, like, the the third "official" release date given for THE NEW MUTANTS in the last few months alone.

First, the Josh Boone (FAULT IN OUR STARS) directed film, about “[f]ive young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves” received massive, years-long delays due to 20th Century Fox wanting major re-shoots to make the superhero film more like a…well…superhero film, and less like a horror film (which never happened due to the horror-tinged trailer getting a great response, as well as consistently scoring well at test screenings).

After that, THE NEW MUTANTS (which had finished production in 2017) was finally officially set to be released in February, then August 2019…which is right about when the Disney-Fox merger was happening, pushing the film back again to April 3rd, 2020. That is until, you know, world events conspired to shut down all theaters until further notice. With that in mind, we got a seeming confirmation that it will be a "digital only" release to be pre-ordered on Amazon…which was then promptly taken down, and was then assured by the studio that it would be guaranteed a "theatrical release".

Well, according to the 20th Century Fox Twitter account – which also unveiled a re-designed poster – the theatrical release date is now "officially" August 28th.

Like I said, I don't want to be too cynical (and really want theaters to be open by then, as well as excited for THE NEW MUTANTS), but I've been hurt too many times already…But who knows? Maybe this time it'll stick.

So what do you guys think? You excited for the film to finally come out? Or is this going to be a DUKE NUKEM FOREVER thing, where the long wait won't be worth it? Either way, sound off below!
