A note to all of you budding screenwriters out there: please use shorter titles than A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE MIND OF CHARLES SWAN III. You’ll shoot yourself in the foot for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which being online critics won’t be fans of retyping your title. And before you complain: using copy/paste isn’t much easier.
With that being said, let’s take a look at the promotional art. Which is about what we’ve come to expect from inside the mind of writer/director Roman Coppola. Eye-catchingly inscrutable. Strange. Making no bones about the fact that the movie’s starring the controversial Charlie Sheen. Is Charlie Sheen even still controversial?
Word around the internet-fire is that the movie becomes a victim of its own strangeness and settles for the shock value of peculiarity rather than develop a cohesive construct within the madness. To find out whether you agree, disagree, or are left utterly without any real opinion, you can catch it in limited release on February 8th.
TO THE WONDER, the next film from Terrence Malick, has divided critics and audiences on an even sharper scale than CHARLES SWAN. To some, including star Ben Affleck, it’s his best film yet. Adjectives thrown around have included accessible, universal, beautiful, stunning, and yes, wondrous. To others the film is right up there as Malick’s worst, something so lost in its own esoteric beauty that audiences can’t hope to connect.
