Nicholas Galitzine can currently be seen battling for Eternia as He-Man in Masters of the Universe, but his next project will take him back to Earth as male supermodel Hoyt Richards. To sweeten the pot, none other than Gus Van Sant is in talks to direct the biopic.
Hoyt Richards
Richards is considered to be the first male supermodel and was the highest-paid male model for a time. He modelled for Gianni Versace, Valentino, and Ralph Lauren, all while trapped in a doomsday cult. Pardon?
Hoyt is the subject of Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult, a new HBO docuseries that premiered at the beginning of the month. While Hoyt was the face of major brands, he was also part of Eternal Values, a cult led by Frederich von Mierers, who claimed he was an alien consciousness in human form. I’m starting to see how this could be an interesting movie.
After a seven-year hiatus, Gus Van Sant returned last year with Dead Man’s Wire, so I’m glad we may not have another lengthy wait for his next movie.
Masters of the Universe
Masters of the Universe follows “ten-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe.”
Unfortunately, the film has underperformed at the box office, quite severely in fact. Despite a massive budget, a huge marketing push, and reasonably decent reviews, Masters of the Universe has grossed just $56.2 million since its release last week. I don’t know if we’ll be getting that sequel.
In his review, our own Chris Bumbray said the film is “a lot more fun than many recent superhero movies. It contains plenty of humour and heart without ever going overboard on either. As it should be, it’s a hero’s quest story, and Nicholas Galitzine nails the part.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
