NEIGHBORS director Nicholas Stoller may be reuniting with his star, Seth Rogen, in the very near future for a project that has been in development for quite some time. Dating back to 2012, Rogen and partner Evan Goldberg have been working on a pitch at Paramount that involves cops during the 1940s. It has been rumored for a while that it would star Rogen alongside Kevin Hart but now Stoller may be joining the fun.
In an interview with SlashFilm, Stoller shed some light on what his upcoming project may be.
The next thing I want to direct is this thing for Seth [Rogen] and Kevin Hart. It’s basically about the first white cop black cop pairing in history. That takes place in the late ’40s and they have to bust jazz musicians for weed. It’s kind of a Baz Luhrmann world mixed with Tarantino shit. It’s a lot of things.
First off, Stoller had me at Baz Luhrmann meets Quentin Tarantino. That mix right there of two of the most creative filmmakers working today sounds pretty damn awesome when combined with comedy, a genre those two rarely work in. Stoller’s NEIGHBORS looks like it is could be the comedy of the summer and if he can manage to get Rogen and Hart into the same movie you can bet your ass the studio is going to greenlight it.
For whatever reason, I keep visualizing 21 JUMP STREET crossed with THE OTHER GUYS and HARLEM NIGHTS. That may sound batshit crazy, but I would even settle for 48 HRS meets THE GREAT GATSBY mixed with OBSERVE AND REPORT.
