Nicole Kidman would love to do a third season of Big Little Lies

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

SPOILERS for Big Little Lies below. Big Little Lies was originally intended to be a mini-series, but once the awards began stacking up and its popularity exploded, HBO renewed the series for a second season. Getting the all-star cast back together for a follow-up wasn't easy, but most, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz, returned for more. The second season hasn't been released yet, but there's already a question of whether or not a third outing is in the cards.

Nicole Kidman spoke with Variety recently and was asked what she thought about a possible third season. Before you start getting excited, Kidman cautioned that "it would be hard to get the whole group together" once again, but added that "we would love to do it." If the second season enjoys the same prestige as the first, I'd imagine that HBO would be keen to make a third happen, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see where the next season leaves us.

The second season will begin with many characters still processing the death Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), and will further explore "the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode … the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom." Jane (Woodley) is attempting to build a new life for herself and Ziggy (Iain Armitage), with Renata (Dern) finding herself faced with new challenges in her marriage and Bonnie (Kravitz) struggling with Perry's death and forced to face the demons of her past. Joining the cast for the second season is none other than Meryl Streep, who will be playing Perry's mother, Mary Lousie Wright. Concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry’s death, Mary Louise will come to Monterey searching for answers. Nicole Kidman told Variety that Streep actually signed on without even reading a script, saying "that's how much she wanted to support us." Kidman is certainly no slouch in the acting department, but even she felt the pressure of sharing the screen with Meryl Streep.

I was terrified. You’re acting opposite the great one. I get nervous anyway — but to be opposite her and not want her to think, ‘Who is this amateur?’ And also, we want to deliver a series for her that she’s great in. Reese and I were like, ‘We want this for her and for the other women.’ They have much stronger roles in the second one.

The second season of Big Little Lies will debut on HBO in 2019.
