Last year, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-creator Akiva Goldsman pitched a spinoff series dubbed Star Trek: Year One, which would take place during the first year of Captain James T. Kirk’s five-year mission. It seemed a natural progression, especially as the end of Strange New Worlds will show Kirk’s first day in command of the Enterprise, but Goldsman has now shared a disappointing update.
Star Trek: Year One Won’t Happen
“Nobody’s called, the sets are gone,” Goldsman told RadioTimes. “Everybody else has started to take other jobs. It’s never been officially yes, and it’s never been officially no. But I don’t see it happening.“
He continued, “I don’t know. It’s above my pay grade. Maybe somebody calls and says, ‘Hey, do a two-hour movie,’ or, ‘We want the show.’ Great! But there was a moment where it would have been the most expeditious, creatively and economically, to just continue because we had a lot of assets which are now no longer.“
Much of the cast who would continue on Year One have already been introduced on Strange New Worlds, and the final season will also introduce McCoy and Sulu, with Thomas Jane as the doctor and Kai Murakami as the helmsman. I guess our time with them will be brief.
Goldsman’s Time With Star Trek Is Over
The Star Trek franchise is at a turning point, with no new TV projects in development, and Goldsman now feels that his time with the franchise has come to an end.
“I would have loved to have done Year One and kept on with this group because they’re my cohort now,” he said. “But I do think that, at least for me, my time with Star Trek is over now. I was really lucky – Strange New Worlds was everything I imagined when I couldn’t even imagine it, as a little boy playing Star Trek. Now I got to be a bigger boy playing Star Trek with somebody else’s toys.” Goldsman isn’t sure what the future holds, but he’s confident Star Trek will find its way back, regardless of what happens.
The fourth season finale of Strange New Worlds will premiere on September 24, and the series will conclude with its fifth and final season. Unlike previous seasons, this one will be a little shorter, with just 6 episodes.’
