Omega: Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid signs on for reality-warping sci-fi film

Commercial director Simon McQuoid made his feature directorial debut on last year’s video game adaptation Mortal Kombat, but while a Mortal Kombat 2 is currently in development, there’s no word on whether or not McQuoid will be coming back to direct the sequel. What we do know, thanks to Deadline, is that McQuoid has signed on to direct the sci-fi movie Omega for Columbia Pictures / Sony.

Omega started out with a script by short filmmaker David M. Crabtree. Polaroid and Hell Fest writer Blair Butler is now handling rewrites. The story of Omega is set “in the sparse landscapes of rural Texas” and follows

a downtrodden young woman who gets more than she bargained for when she helps a mysterious stranger: a reality-warping power that thrusts her into a dark underworld with ancient origins. As she finds herself hunted by a cabal of hitmen she must try to master her burgeoning skills and discover who she really is.

Butler was also a producer on the Hulu / Marvel series Helstrom, and wrote the Dracula-inspired film The Bride, which is coming to us from Screen Gems and stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Thomas Doherty.

Jason Michael Berman is producing Omega for Mandalay Pictures, while Jordan Moldo executive produces for the company. Peter Kang and Alex Rosario are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures / Sony.

Omega is only in the development phase at the moment, so it might be a little while before we hear about it moving into production. Maybe it will be possible for McQuoid to direct both this film and Mortal Kombat 2.
