Only Godzilla: King of the Monsters can save the Earth in final trailer

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Mike Dougherty

One month out from the release of TRICK 'R TREAT director Mike Dougherty's GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, a sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 GODZILLA film, a new trailer has been released online, and this one is referred to as the final trailer. Mixing together some things we've seen employed in KING OF THE MONSTERS marketing before – the line stating that there are "seventeen and counting" monsters rampaging around the world, the use of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on the soundtrack – this trailer boasts some incredible imagery and makes the reason for the title clear.

"GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS!" was already the title used for the American release of the original, Japanese GOJIRA in the 1950s, but the re-use makes sense for the story scripted by Dougherty, his KRAMPUS co-writer Zach Shields, and GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND's Max Borenstein. Here the characters realize the monsters that have risen around the globe are responding to an alpha, the three-headed Ghidorah. So it's up to Godzilla to defeat this alpha and prove himself the King of the Monsters, saving the Earth in the process.

Okay then, I can accept the recycled title.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS centers on

the heroic efforts of Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species thought to be mere myths rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Sharing the screen with Godzilla, Ghidorah, and other monsters like Mothra and Rodan are humans played by Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Zhang Ziyi, Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Randy Havens, Jonathan Howard, Anthony Ramos, Bradley Whitford, Elizabeth Ludlow, David Strathairn, and Ken Watanabe.

Jason Liles, Richard Dorton, and Alex Maxson provided the motion capture performances for Ghidorah's three heads.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is scheduled to reach theatres on May 31st.
