Army of Thieves star Matthias Schweighöfer is joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. He joins an A-list cast that already includes Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Emily Blunt, Josh Hartnett, Matt Damon, Jason Clarke, David Dastmalchian, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy, who will star in the title role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie will be the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since 2020’s Tenet. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. In addition to directing the feature, Nolan will also write the script and produce alongside Emma Thomas and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven. Oppenheimer is set to explode in theaters on July 23, 2023, roughly two weeks before the anniversary of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima.

Although Schweighöfer has been in the acting biz since the mid-90s, most of our readers know him as Ludwig Dieter, the safe-cracking smartass from Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Schweighöfer’s Dieter was such a hit that Netflix gave the character a spinoff titled Army of Thieves. In addition to reprising his role, Schweighöfer also directed the film. Up next for Schweighöfer is a part in Sally El Hosaini’s The Swimmers. The film tells the story of the miraculous journey made by swimming sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini, who fled as refugees from war-torn Syria to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

At the rate that people are being added to the cast of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, I wouldn’t be surprised if I land a part in the film as well. We’ll be sure to let you know if that comes to pass, in addition to any other updates that might come along.
