It’s weird, Hollywood and the movie business is the only business I know where companies can treat consumers like mindless idiots and not only stay in business, but make millions of dollars doing it. For example, New Line / Warner Bros. believes that people can’t read and are therefore going forward with THE ORPHANAGE remake. Yes, the same ORPHANAGE that was released in 2008.

According to Variety, Mark Pellington has been tapped to direct the English language version of the film, from a script by Larry Fessenden and Guillermo del Toro. The only reason why this doesn’t sound like a completely horrendous idea is because of the dudes who wrote the screenplay. I’m a huge fan of Del Toro, and if he wrote this shit, then I suppose I gotta be a little bit on board. Not a lot, but a little…

Pellington’s filmography isn’t as bad as it could be, as he gave us the underrated madman bomber movie ARLINGTON ROAD, the Richard Gere ‘based on a true story’ THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, and music videos for U2 and Pearl Jam. Not a bad lineup, and just sparce enough for the prospects of THE ORPHANAGE to be of some quality, if just a little bit.

The original ORPHANAGE went a bit like this: Laura (Belén Rueda) who purchases her beloved childhood orphanage with dreams of restoring and reopening the long abandoned facility as a place for disabled children. Once there, Laura discovers that the new environment awakens her son’s imagination, but the ongoing fantasy games he plays with an invisible friend quickly turn into something more disturbing. Upon seeing her family increasingly threatened by the strange occurrences in the house, Laura looks to a group of parapsychologists for help in unraveling the mystery that has taken over the place.

Stick around for more on the English version of this movie (cause according to studios, American audiences can’t read for shit) as we hear it!

You can’t remake the hotness of Belén Rueda!
