Generally speaking, when movies are based on board games, or amusement park rides, or anything that stretches the possible limits of basing a movie around something (like furniture, cereal, or toys), the results are somewhat unsatisfactory. With every PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, there’s a THE HAUNTED MANSION–actually, there’s probably more blunders in this field of adaptations than hits.
Which brings me to my point: The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that Universal Pictures and Platinum Dunes are joining forces with Hasbro to produce a movie based on the OUIJA Board. Pronounced ‘We-G,’ OUIJA has been around since the mid sixties, promising the telling of fortunes and all things supernatural. Speak with the dead, ask details about the future, you name it–the Ouija Board can do it.
While adaptations of this nature usually spell a recipe for disaster, I’m actually digging on this one pretty well. No plot points or storyline details have been revealed yet (from a script written by ELF writter Bennett Schneir), other than the story will revolve around the supernatural game.
Considering the Ouija Board (or games like it) have been the center of plenty of other spookfests over the years, it’s actually surprising that this hasn’t been thought of before now. Will the characters channel the dead? Be sent on a murder mystery, solving the case of an unjustified death? Oh the possibilities are endless.
The best thing to do at this point is to bust out your own Ouija Board and ask it this one question: Will OUIJA BOARD: THE MOVIE suck balls or rock the house? Spit its answers below, and stick around for more on OUIJA as we hear it.
