movie easter eggs

These days part of the fun of watching a movie in theaters or at home with the ability to freeze frames, is finding the hidden Easter eggs hidden within. For the history buffs out there, the origin of the cinematic Easter egg dates back to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Supposedly one day on the set, the cast decided to have a traditional Easter egg hunt, as you do, but some of the eggs were never found and actually appeared in frames of the movie! So if you're obsessed with finding hidden messages, jokes, and ways to make you look smart in front of your friends, check out these Easter eggs!

Understandably some of these have been around for a while, but some may be new to other readers; there’s no expiration date on sharing so enjoy and have fun!

FIGHT CLUB – A less serious warning

This weekend director David Fincher’s GONE GIRL will be released and no doubt create dissension among those who have read the souce material and those who have not. The same reaction was felt with his 1999 release of FIGHT CLUB (see the spoiler-filled differences here). We kick things off this time with a one of David Fincher’s classics, and you wouldn’t have seen this gem in the theater, this is a DVD Easter egg folks. When the DVD is starting up and after the FBI warning, the screen briefly changes to a warning from Tyler Durden.

For those who wish not to strain their eyes, it reads:

If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second of your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all who claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think everything you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told you should want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned…….Tyler.

WATCHMEN – The Wayne’s are saved!

This single frame is packed with more Easter eggs than an entire Marvel movie! First the criminal is likely to be none other than Joe Chill, the mugger who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents. Speaking of parents, the scared couple by the door sure do resemble Thomas and Martha Wayne of Gotham City. We know it is Gotham because in the back the sign reads "Gotham Opera House" (where the Wayne’s were killed in the comics) and "Fledermaus," (on the wall) is German for "Bat." Oh, and I guess those Batman posters are a giveaway too.

Watch the intro again because it's awesome:

INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM – I bet they serve Guinness

I put my own Easter egg in the title of this one, good for you if you catch it. This one is short and fun; the club that Indiana Jones jumps out of in Temple of Doom is called "Club Obi Wan". It’s a restaurant and nightclub in Shanghai, China in the 1930s controlled by Lao Che. If you don’t get the less than subtle nod to STAR WARS we can’t be friends anymore.

STAR TREK (2009) – We get it, you love STAR WARS!

If you blinked during the showing of J.J. Abrams’ reboot of STAR TREK, you likely missed this one. During one of the Enterprise scenes, you can see R2-D2 flying past the screen. The little in-joke was eventually confirmed by the folks at Industrial Light and Magic; but could be seen as some great foreshadowing as J.J. Abrams is currently working on the STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

GODZILLA (2014) – Walter White out

In Gareth Edwards’ GODZILLA, the name Walter White (Breaking Bad) makes an appearance happens in the opening minute of the film. In the video and images below you will see the title credit for Bryan Cranston appears on screen in a very creative way. Forever Breaking Bad!
