First off, no, this isn’t the Marcus Nispel-helmed Viking movie that landed with a thud at the box office a couple weeks back. This is OUTLANDER, and while still Viking-centric, it sounds a bit more promising, with a cooler cast, an impressive-looking creature designed by Patrick Tatopoulos, and a more appealing storyline: An alien dude (Jim Caviezel) crash lands on Earth during the reign of the Vikings, unfortunately bringing with him a giant, lethal monster, who I’m guessing learns to love the taste of Viking meat… Alien dude equips the Vikings with some futuristic weaponry and mayhem ensues.
Shock till You Drop guru Ryan Rotten caught up with OUTLANDER producer Don Carmody and had a few choice words with him regarding the film. (friendly choice words though, not ones of the “F*ck you, motherf*cker!” variety.)
“I just saw two more rough sequences with the creature where it’s looking really, really cool.”
Carmody says Outlander conquered a rough start and endured an even tougher shooting schedule “sloggin’ through the mud in Newfoundland and Halifax. It was challenging because my partners had tried to mount [the project] before in New Zealand with WETA and $65-70 million dollars. So they came to me and asked if I could help them raise the balance of the financing. I said if everybody is on the same page, we can do it, and as long as it’s all up there on the screen we can do it. I think we succeeded, it was really tough.”
“The aim is [to release the film] for late-October, but the picture is running long. We’re getting down to length and that may delay us a little, that’s always the toughest thing.”
Apparently “running long” means it’s presently clocking in at three hours. He adds that OUTLANDER will have an estimated 580 visual effects shots.

The creature, known as the Moorwen, is in the early model stages, but if they can pull it off, this badboy will be pretty frightening indeed.
Other than Jim “You can call me Jesus” Caviezel, OUTLANDER stars John Hurt, Ron Perlman and UNDERWORLD cutie Sophia Myles, who’s so adorable she makes a little baby kitten look like a rancid piece of shit-covered garbage (maybe too far, but she’s adorable, alright?).
