Pacific Rim gets a new viral poster featuring a badass robot

JoBloJoBlo

It is about damn time that we get a new image from PACIFIC RIM. I have been patient, waiting with bated breath to get a glimpse at the full scale mechs in Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters vs. robots slugfest. While this may not in fact be a still from the movie, it is still pretty cool.

Exclusively for the New York Comic Con, Nerdist has shared a promotional poster for the movie that focuses on the aforementioned giant robots. The image is in shadow and looks like a piece of concept art, which it is. The poster was created by artist Raúl Monge, who has worked with Del Toro on PAN’S LABYRINTH and HELLBOY 2.

According to Del Toro, “Raúl is one of my top concept designers. The idea with this particular piece was to emulate an old WWII propaganda poster/flyer that went along with the world we were creating. It symbolizes rationing – voluntary work force, no guts, no glory kind of heroism.”

I love the old school look mixed with the robot imagery. It reminds me a lot of the propaganda scenes from STARSHIP TROOPERS, my favorite parts of that movie. Those of you lucky enough to attend the NYCC this weekend, make sure you stop by and check out all the cool PACIFIC RIM stuff on display.

Del Toro also revealed that there will be a prequel graphic novel by PACIFIC RIM screenwriter Travis Beacham. Add to that the news that we will see the teaser trailer in front of THE HOBBIT on December 14th, and there is not much else you can ask for.

PACIFIC RIM opens on July 12th, 2013.
