Paper Girls cancelled by Prime Video after one season

Paper Girls, cancelled

Paper Girls is no more. Amazon’s adaptation of the best-selling graphic novels written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang may have received positive reviews, but reviews aren’t everything. Deadline has reported that Paper Girls has been cancelled after just one season on Prime Video.

The coming-of-age sci-fi series kicks off in the early morning of the day after Halloween in 1988 and follows four young women who find themselves transported to the future where they encounter grown-up versions of themselves. Despite the cancellation, Paper Girls may not be totally dead. Sources told Deadline that Legendary TV plans on shopping the series around. The series dropped on Prime Video last month, but some feel that it never got a fair shake as Amazon was in the midst of a massive marketing campaign for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

In the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, four paper girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ—are out on their delivery route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever,” reads the official synopsis. “Transported into the future, these girls must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by a militant faction of time-travelers known as the Old Watch, who have outlawed time travel so that they can stay in power. In order to survive, the girls will need to overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, and themselves.

Paper Girls creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang executive produced the TV series alongside Stephany Folsom. Christopher C. Rogers, Steven Prinz, Christopher Cantwell, and Plan B. Folsom developed the TV series and served as co-showrunner alongside Christopher C. Rogers, but she departed midway through production. How do you feel about Paper Girls getting cancelled?
