Put away the chalk and fold up the mats because Netflix‘s Olympic gymnastics drama Perfect is no longer tumbling toward the streaming network. According to reports, the project, with Gia Coppola directing from a screenplay by Ronnie Sandahl, is no longer happening after Millie Bobby Brown exited over creative differences. News about the film’s cancellation comes from two different sources.
Who is Kerri Strug?
Brown would have starred as Kerri Strug in the defunct drama. Famously known as a member of the “Magnificent Seven,” Strug dominated the gymnastic scene in 1996. She was essential to landing the gold medal after performing a vault on an injured ankle. The photograph of her perfect landing “went viral,” as much as something can back then. Another photo of Strug’s coach carrying her off the mat is just as iconic.
Why doesn’t Netflix replace Brown and continue production? In addition to leading the film as Kerri Strug, Brown was set to produce through her PMCA banner, with Nik Bower (Riverstone Pictures) and Thomas Benski (Magna Studios) also producing.
Millie Bobby Brown’s got plenty of irons in the fire
Brown recently wrapped production for Enola Holmes 3, starring Brown, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter. The cozy mystery film takes Enola on her most mysterious and dangerous case yet. One of Brown’s other projects, Just Picture It, is in post-production. Lee Toland Krieger directs Just Picture It from a script by Jesse Lasky. The comedic romance follows two carefree college students who experience a strange phenomenon when their phones begin showing them pictures from ten years in the future. Brown leads the Just Picture It cast alongside Anthony Keyvan, Margo Martindale, Julian Dennison, Brec Bassinger, Idina Menzel, and more. Finally, Brown’s upcoming fantasy horror film, Prism, is in pre-production. Prism focuses on Cassie, a woman who can communicate with apparitions, who must uncover the cause of a mysterious phenomenon that’s making ghosts appear worldwide before it’s too late.
It’s a shame to think that Perfect would make it to screens. What happened? “Creative differences” is always a curious reason to put a pin in something that takes so much time and effort to arrange. If nothing else, it shows how essential Brown was to the project and speaks to the power she wields at such a young age.
