Piranha 3DD going straight to DVD in the UK in March?

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

Bad news for our friends living across the pond who were having visions of Gary Busey vs. school of piranhas in glorious 3D: seems as though Dimension’s PIRANHA 3DD is going straight to DVD/Blu-ray in the UK.

On the official British Video Association website (via Shock Til You Drop), the John Gulager-directed sequel is listed as having a MARCH 19th release date on home video. Under the “theatrical release” heading, it reads, “pulled from schedule”. Fascinating.

No word on what the deal is with the US release; you’ll recall that it once owned a September slot, then a Thanksgiving slot, but then it was ultimately pulled from the calendar completely. (It is Dimension, however, and they never stick with just one or two release dates for long.) The fact that the first one made only $25 million domestic could indicate that the sequel might fit more naturally on the shelves as opposed to theaters. At the very least, a straight-to-DVD journey would save money on prints and advertising…

PIRANHA 3DD stars Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Gary Busey, Chris Zylka, Chelan Simmons, David Koechner and David Hasselhof.
