Sometimes there’s news out there that makes you go ‘hmmmmm’, and sometimes there’s new out there that makes you go ‘what the f*ck?’. And today is one of those news days. According to IESB, Alexandre Aja, the director of both HIGH TENSION and the remake of THE HILLS HAVE EYES, is gearing up to direct another remake: PIRANHA!
Yes, the original tongue-in-cheek horror/comedy, which played off of bigger monster movies like JAWS, is looking to be next on the remake chopping block. Originally directed by Joe Dante, PIRANHA may feel dated and a little on the goofy side, but as it came out around the time of JAWS (when monster shark movies were huge), I just don’t know if it’d come off the same way to today’s audiences.
Also, can you see Aja doing a light-hearted horror/comedy/spoof? It seems to me that he’d do it about as hardcore as any movie called PIRANHA you could imagine- and there’d be no tongue placed firmly in any cheek (but more likely a few being grotesquely ripped out). But maybe that’s what the world needs right now: a hardcore brutal horror movie about man eating Piranha’s. I can dig it.
Of course, as it’s reported via IESB, it’d be wise to take this with a grain of salt until it becomes ‘officially announced’ in the trades (i.e. Variety and/or The Hollywood Reporter).
