Darren Aronofsky raised eyebrows when he ventured to make a film about the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. But, as his cast and crew came together and images teasing the scope of the project, the naysayers began to jump on board. One of those naysayers was actor Ray Winstone.

In an interview with Crave Online, Winstone shed some new details on the movie including his initial reluctance regarding the project:

“When I first heard about it, I said, ‘Is it Noah’s Ark? We know what it’s about. Russell’s going to play Noah?’ And I was laughing. Then I read the script. I understood it was Darren Aronofsky who was going to direct it which made me sit up. Then I read the script and I went, ‘Oh yeah, hold on a minute. This is really, really good.’ His artwork is quite amazing on it as well.”

The story that will be the focus of Aronofsky’s NOAH will be one of madness. Without seeing any footage of the film, it is hard to say if this will be a traditionally lensed movie like THE WRESTLER or something more surreal like THE FOUNTAIN or REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. What we do know that that NOAH is going to venture deeper into the tale than we have ever seen.

“The madness of Noah is a big thing. How do you look at someone who says, ‘I want to save all the animals in the world but not the people?’ So it’s kind of a double edged sword really. It’s set in the days, it’s set back in the time but you get that kind of vibe that it’s all happened before, that humanity and civilization was there before as big as it is today. It’s got that kind of ring to it as well.”

Aronofsky is one of our most unique directors and every one of his projects is something special. I am very intrigued to see how NOAH turns out. And with a spectacular cast that includes Crowe, Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, and Logan Lerman, it will be hard to ignore.

NOAH opens the floodgates on March 28, 2014.
