After four seasons, NBC cancelled the Jenna Bans-created crime comedy series Good Girls just last month. But they're staying in the Bans business, as it has just been announced that Bans will be executive producing a "sexy, swampy, dark dramedy/thriller" that's in the works at the network. The new show lifts its title from Stephen King's The Shining: it's being called Redrum. "Murder" backwards, you know.
Set up at Universal Television, Redrum will be written, directed, and executive produced by Nzingha Stewart (Tall Girl), based on her original idea. Good Girls executive producer Carla Banks-Waddles will also be executive producing and serving as showrunner. Bans is executive producing through her production banner Minnesota Logging Company, alongside Minnesota Logging's Head of Television Casey Kyber.
Redrum will center on
two best friends — Jess and Sadie – who host a podcast about New Orleans’ most infamous serial killers. But when they make fun of the wrong sociopath and people close to them start to turn up dead, our friends, who are grossly ill-equipped for this unfortunate circumstance, realize they have to do what the police haven’t: find the killer before they become the victims of their own story. Let the good times roll.
The idea of the hosts of a serial killer podcast being targeted by a serial killer is a good one. It could make for a cool movie for sure. We'll have to wait and see how well it sustains a series, if NBC ends up ordering it to series.
The network acquired the Redrum project before they decided to cancel Good Girls. That show starred Christina Hendricks, Retta, and Mae Whitman as suburban mothers whose lives spiraled out of control after they committed a robbery. Good Girls had a great cast, so it will be interesting to see who they get to play the lead characters in Redrum.
