Ridley Scott brings the Xenomorph back in Alien: Covenant trailer

Last week, the news was pretty well dominated by the steady stream of new ALIEN: COVENANT images that were being released through the ALIEN franchise's official social media accounts. There are a few more images featured in this article, but it has turned out that the unveiling of all those stills last week was a build up to something big: the holiday weekend release of the film's first trailer, which can be seen below in all its red band glory.

Set ten years after the events of PROMETHEUS and twenty years before the original ALIEN, this sequel/prequel looks like a bloody and intense blend of the styles of those two films. The things that are reminiscent of PROMETHEUS don't get me too excited, but the imagery that looks like classic ALIEN stuff does get me hyped to see director Ridley Scott working with Xenomorphs again. I also like the exploitation/slasher sensibility displayed with the inclusion of a shower sex scene that gets interrupted by a creature.

I wasn't wowed by PROMETHEUS, but I'm still totally on board for ALIEN: COVENANT.

Scripted by Michael Green, Jack Paglen, and John Logan, ALIEN: COVENANT has the following synopsis:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Katherine Waterson, Danny McBride, Benjamin Rigby, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smollett, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Callie Hernandez, Billy Crudup, Noomi Rapace, James Franco, Guy Pearce, and Michael Fassbender star.

JoBlo editor-in-chief Paul Shirey recently interviewed Waterston and saw a sneak preview of some ALIEN: COVENANT scenes. If you'd like to watch the interview and read his rundown of what happened in those scenes, click over here.
