Well folks it wasn’t to long ago that Eric was telling us how producer/writer Damon Lindelof was finally opening up a bit more about Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS. Actually it was only a couple days ago.
Now here I am with the news that Ridley Scott himself is finally shedding some light on the mysterious sci-fi flick. About time right? Though here’s hoping they don’t end up giving too much away because let’s face it, in today’s day and age keeping a flick mysterious is half the battle.
So you see, Scott and PROMETHEUS stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace were recently at CineEurope to stir up some excitement for PROMETHEUS and the director spilled some more details on the project. Check it:
Scott acknowledged that Prometheus, while not a direct prequel to Alien, occupies the same general universe, saying the picture was inspired by a desire to explore the mystery of the “space jockey” the giant fossilized creature with the burst-open chest seen in the first Alien movie but never explained.
Scott (above) also confirmed that the film’s title is the name of a space ship sent from earth by an all-powerful corporation of the kind familiar to fans of the Alien franchise. The mythical reference – in Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the gods to give to man — is deliberate.
He even went on to say the film, and Lindelof’s script, was partially inspired by the writings of legendary Swiss sci-fi writer Eric van Daniken: “NASA and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way. That’s what we’re looking at (in the film), at some of Eric van Daniken’s ideas of how did we humans come about.”
Things are finally starting to come together! Now we’re getting somewhere. And that’s not all! Fassbender even hinted a bit more as to what his character might be: Fassbender did hint his character, David, might be a version of the infamous corporate-designed android that plays a pivotal role in all Alien films.
Oh what a tease. So there you have it folks, a nice juicy PROMETHEUS update to help answer some nagging questions, though I’m sure there are lots more. Hopefully they’ll leave some of those questions, if not most, to be answered in the film.
Along with Fassbender and Rapace PROMETHEUS is also set to star Guy Pearce, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron (below). This bad larry is slated to hit theaters everywhere on June 8, 2012.
