R.I.P. Hunter S. Thompson

I know we don’t normally cover news like this, but it’s just so jarring to hear… and even a bit sad. It’s not exactly horror, but anyone who’s seen FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS knows of the horrors that extreme drug use can induce.

Hunter S. Thompson, “gonzo journalist” and writer of 1972’s FEAR AND LOATHING, as well as THE RUM DIARY, HELL’S ANGELS and BETTER THAN SEX, died Sunday night in his home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 67.

Even before Johnny Depp depicted him in 1998, Thompson had a huge cult following, and his books have been widely recieved. He penned the term ‘gonzo journalism’, which is the type of journalism where the author puts themselves in the story. He was well ahead of his time, and his books will always be seen as classics to those of us fortunate to have read them.

He paved the road for many to follow, but no one can or ever will be able to lay it down like Hunter S. Thompson.
