Way back at the beginning of September we were tickled with the news that IRON MAN team Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau would be teaming up for a third time for the adaptation of the graphic novel COWBOYS & ALIENS. Well that was awesome news! Downey Jr. and Favreau slapping together a genre flick for the Summer blockbuster season? Yes!

No? You see Downey was recently in a film called SHERLOCK HOLMES, which was somewhat of a success. And by somewhat I mean huge. So what does that have to do with COWBOYS & ALIENS? Entertainment Weekly dropped the word that Downey Jr. has chosen a fast-tracking SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 instead of Favreau’s COWBOYS & ALIENS adaptation. Ouch. I’m sorry but that f*cking sucks!

And SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 isn’t even greenlit yet! But it’s only a matter of time. Hell it’s already got a June 2010 start date… which just so happens to be the start date for COWBOYS & ALIENS. And here-in lies the problem. I’m sure Downey, a quirky dude, was looking forward to battling some alien baddies but I’m sure money talks and the obvious choice is there.

Worry not though ladies and gentlemen, Favreau is still attached and the man is one of the best directors working today. So we’re in very good hands. Plus I’m sure DreamWorks and Universal will be snatching up another big name actor to star in their Summer 2011 film. Hopefully that name will be decided soon! I’ll leave you all with the synopsis for the supernatural/action romp COWBOYS & ALIENS:

COWBOYS & ALIENS centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers, including a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson, that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Ariz. The story draws a parallel between the American imperialist drive to conquer the “savage” Indians with its advanced technology and the aliens’ assault on Earthlings, who must join together to survive the invaders’ attack.
