Robert Downey Jr’s next will be Steve McQueen’s Yucatan

JoBloJoBlo

Since IRON MAN, Robert Downey Jr. has a been a red hot property, and can have his pick of any number of projects. With THE AVENGERS, SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 and probably IRON MAN 3 all on the horizon, what is actually going to be next for him?

Well, it’s none of the above. HOLMES writer Anthony Peckham has been hired to script YUCATAN, by Downey’s production house in a project for Downey himself to star. What’s it all about?

Peckham will script the picture for Downey to play a renegade deep-sea salvage expert hired to steal a mysterious hidden treasure hidden deep underwater in the Mayan ruins of Yucatan.

Where does the Steve McQueen bit in the title factor into this? Well, the entire thing is based off of a story from McQueen, and is being assembled from 1500 pages of notes he wrote in the ’60s. He originally had intended for himself to star, but the project fell by the wayside, and now after his death, his family only recently discovered the notebooks locked away in an old trunk, and thought it might be worth making into a film at long last.

Treasure hunting always makes for a good time, though if much of the action is underwater, that could get a bit tiresome. But it looks like things are moving forward on YUCATAN quickly, and I expect we’ll be hearing more about it soon.
