The film adaptation of Scott Smith’s THE RUINS is on the fast track, and Paramount is letting us know it. Box Office Mojo has listed a March 7, 2008 release date for the horror film, to be helmed by Carter Smith (no relation to the author).
THE RUINS is a creepy yarn that sounds like TURISTAS meets the “tree rape” scene in EVIL DEAD: a group of friends vacationing in Cancun get lost in the jungle and are set upon by and killer vines. That’s right, killer vines. I haven’t read it (yet), but the book has received all kinds of raves, especially a particularly glowing one from Stephen King (who, is it possible?, has never written a murderous-foliage tale, that I know of).
Although it’s Carter Smith’s feature film debut, he’s already got an encouraging track record: his short BUGCRUSH won the Short Filmmaking Award at last year’s Sundance.
