A new red band trailer for the killer-vine horror flick THE RUINS has popped up on the film’s official site. While it isn’t exactly deserving of the “red band” label (it’s no more bloody or unnerving than the first teaser), it still sells the film as a high-end B-picture with an entertainingly goofy premise. I’ve heard the book is strange and scary – whether that will translate to film will be intriguing to see, as the prospect of menacing plantlife isn’t necessarily keeping me up nights.
THE RUINS is about four unlucky tourists who visit an ancient Mayan temple. Of course, it’s got a curse on it or some such business, and they’re forced to wonder why the hell they didn’t just go to Bermuda. Directed by Carter Smith, with a screenplay by the novel’s author, it stars Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore, Jonathan Tucker, and Laura Ramsey. It hits theaters April 4.
(Fun fact: The flick was executive produced by Ben Stiller! Stiller apparently likes author Scott Smith, since he was once attached to direct the author’s A SIMPLE PLAN, before Sam Raimi boarded it.)
