Ryan Murphy revealed the new American Horror Story season title at Comic Con

Last Updated on January 30, 2026

Ryan Murphy has used the buzz at San Diego Comic Con to his advantage and unveiled the title of the upcoming seventh season of American Horror Story in grand fashion. FX has a significant presence here at SDCC this year and Murphy used that to unveil American Horror Story: Cult using a slew of creepy costumed people handing out pins emblazoned with the series logo. Projected on the waterfront adjoining the convention center, Murphy’s horror anthology series solidified the countless theories that come with each new year of the award-winning show.

On the heels of the news that Lena Dunham would appear on the show, the reveal of the Cult subtitle doesn’t give us much detail about what the new season is actually about, but the creepy teaser that accompanied the reveal has fans working overtime to try and figure it out. Check out the title image from the teaser below.

If you recall, Ryan Murphy previously indicated that the new season of American Horror Story would tackle the aftershocks of the recent Presidential Election. It is still possible that the titular cult could be referring to those who follow either of the political parties in the United States or could be directly calling out supporters of Donald Trump. it could also have nothing to do with politics and, as some have been thinking, could directly tie back to the character of Twisty the Clown. Twisty was previously a supporting character in Freak Show, the fourth season of the show. Twisty was played by John Carroll Lynch and eventually succeeded by Finn Wittrock’s Dandy Mott. Could the new season of the show take the legacy of the murderous clown to the next level? We will have to wait and see.

I have watched every season of American Horror Story as well as all of Ryan Murphy‘s other shows like American Crime Story, Feud and Scream Queens. The anthology format is a great way to not stretch a single narrative for too long. But, even American Horror Story has had hits and misses. While I was not a huge fan of the Coven or Freak Show seasons, last year’s Roanoke was one of the best since the series began. Hopefully Cutl will do something different with the structure of the season and give us something we have not seen before.

The new season will feature an ensemble cast that includes Evan PetersSarah Paulson, Adina Porter, Cheyenne Jackson, Frances Conroy and Mare Winningham who have all appeared in past seasons. New additions to the cast are Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, Colton Haynes, Alison Pill, and Lena Dunham. The season will consist of 11 episodes. American Horror Story: Cult will premiere on FX on Tuesday, September 5th.
