This RZA film is most certainly not the $20 million budgeted Universal-backed kung-fu project THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS. That film, which RZA co-wrote with Eli Roth, is still in the works but what we have here is a trailer for another RZA kung-fu film, the highly independent WU-TANG VS. THE GOLDEN PHOENIX. What exactly is going on here? It looks like RZA simply wanted to try his hand at directing a kung-fu flick and that’s exactly what he did.
It’s a pretty neat little trailer filled with all the usual vintage kung-fu flourishes that you’d expect but how will it translate into a feature film? Or maybe the better question is whether it will ever translate into a feature film. There’s no release date announced so no idea if/when GOLDEN PHOENIX will ever see the light of day on DVD. But for now it’s at least good practice for when IRON FISTS finally gets into production. Check out the trailer below.
