SAG Awards, 2021, nominations

The Golden Globes weighed in yesterday with their nominations and now it's time for the Screen Actors Guild to get their say. The nominations for the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced and now it's time to see if their picks are in line with the trajectory of the current awards season.

A group of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members vote for the coveted awards and what makes this ceremony a bit different from all the others is that it's the actors that ultimately decide how this all turns out. The nominations were revealed in full pandemic form via Instagram Live at 7:50 AM PST exclusively on the social-networking app and website. Emily in Paris star Lily Collins, who found out she was Golden Globe-nominated yesterday, and Hamilton standout Daveed Diggs hosted the festivities which honor the best of the best in film and television performances. Daveed Diggs actually found out he was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his role in Hamilton which was a nice surprise for him

Besides avoiding a live announcement of the nominees due to the pandemic, SAG revealed that the Instagram Live format was used to provide "an accessible platform for people to share their stories and stay up-to-date with current events. SAG Awards aim to create an authentic connection with their audience by reinventing the nominations announcement into a seamless, virtual experience for both the nominees and the fans."

In the film end of things, Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods was honored in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture after being completely snubbed by the Golden Globes yesterday. Also competing in this category are Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Minari, One Night In Miami, and The Trial of the Chicago 7

The acting categories were mostly familiar with Chadwick Boseman another posthumous nomination for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Steven Yeun becomes a part of the conversation with his performance in Minara earning a nomination. Going back to Boseman, the actor was also honored in the supporting actor category for his performance in Da 5 Bloods. The lead actress category was pretty much business as usual for the current awards season with Carey Mulligan, Frances McDormand, Viola Davis, and Vanessa Kirby getting nominations but sneaking in a bit is Amy Adams for her role in Hillbilly Elegy. The film wasn't entirely well-received although the performances were lauded. Glenn Close also earned supporting honors for her role in the film. The supporting actor race pretty much mirrored the Globes and SAG also chose to honor Jared Leto with a nomination for his role in The Little Things. Could he be headed for a surprise supporting actor nomination at the Oscars? This certainly builds his momentum moving forward. The supporting actress category also showed more love to Minari with a nomination for Youn Yuh-Yung. Minari is definitely going to be one to watch at the Oscars.

Schitt's Creek showed up in a big way again in the comedy categories with the series earning a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Annie Murphy all earning nominations individual nominations. HBO Max's The Flight Attendant also continued its Golden Globe streak from yesterday with the series earning a nod for its ensemble and Kaley Cuoco earning a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. Dead To Me also showed up to play with nominations for both Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini and a nomination for the full ensemble as well.

The drama ensemble category was mostly familiar but the current Netflix sensation Bridgerton earned a nomination after being snubbed by the Golden Globes yesterday. Rege Jean also scored a nomination in the lead actor category for his role on the series. The hit period drama will compete against Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and Lovecraft Country. All of these shows, minus Bridgerton, made a showing with Golden Globe nominations yesterday.  As for The Crown and Ozark, they dominated the lead actress category with three of the female leads landing nods from The Crown while Laura Linney and Julia Garner received the other two nominations for Ozark. Linney's counterpart on Ozark, Jason Bateman, also earned a nomination as the series heads into its final season.

The 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will be simulcast on TNT and TBS on April 4, 2021, at 6:00 PM PST. You can check out the full list of nominees below!
