Samuel L. Jackson can’t figure out why he’s not in Captain America 3

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

With so many members of the Marvel family set to make an appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, it's becoming easier to list those who won't be turning up in the film. One surprising no-show is Samuel L. Jackson, who has portrayed S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury for seven films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor spoke with Collider where he expressed his enthusiasm about working with Marvel but also admitted that he's still trying to figure out why he won't be putting in an appearance in CIVIL WAR:

It’s an amazing amount of fun. I finally met [comics writer] Mark [Millar], last year, when I was doing Kingsman, ‘cause he was on set one day, and I finally got a chance to thank him for making Nick Fury black and changing the whole dynamic. It’s really great to be the connective tissue between so many different characters in so many different films, that brings those guys together. But I’m not in Captain America 3. I can’t figure that out, but I’m not. I guess I’m still out there, trying to figure out what happened to S.H.I.E.L.D. and who these other people are.

When Samuel L. Jackson first came onto the Marvel scene during the post-credit sequence in IRON MAN, he had signed an unbelievable, at the time, nine film contract with Marvel. That contract will soon be coming to an end but Jackson stressed that he doesn't plan on leaving the character of Nick Fury behind saying that he's "looking for a contract extension right now, yeah. I’m looking to re-up.” So long as Samuel L. Jackson wants to keep strapping on the eye-patch, I'll be glad to have him around in future Marvel films.

As CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is still shooting, and Marvel loves putting things in at the last minute, it's possible that Samuel L. Jackson may yet show up for a brief appearance before the film hits its May 6, 2016 release.
