The trend of remaking classic horror films took an all-time low yesterday with the announcement of remaking THE EVIL DEAD. But it wasn’t the only remake news yesterday, as Moviehole reported that Lions Gate Films plans on remaking the David Cronenberg classic SCANNERS.
After attempts by Artisan to be remade in 2002, Lions Gate is picking up the pace and pushing this project forward. With Pierre David, René Malo and Clark Peterson on board to produce, no one has yet has been chosen to director, although James Wan (SAW) was offered the gig- but passed on it.
I always find it interesting what the creators of the original think about their films being redone. Cronenberg had this to say:
“I’d prefer that they not [revisit my earlier work]. I mean, I’m sure that Stanley Kubrick didn’t want to know about the minisereies of The Shining just like I’m not rushing off to watch the miniseries of The Dead Zone either. So it does happen. In this particular case it’s more intimate, because I created Scanners, but I don’t have the legal rights to control it. I could live without it.” He adds, “The chances that a good movie will be made from that are slim just because that’s in the nature of the business. Remakes of old movies are not always going to turn out good”.
Amen to that, brother! It’s good to hear that not everyone in the industry is keen on thie remake bandwagon. True, for every good remake (DAWN OF THE DEAD), there’s a handful of shitty ones (PSYCHO, THIRTEEN GHOSTS)- hard to say where SCANNERS will hit, but my money’s on the later.
