Stephen King once said “Everything’s Eventual”, and this morning that is proving to be more than true. Variety is reporting that Dimension Films has just signed SAW III director Darren Lynn Bousman to direct a remake of David Cronenberg’s SCANNERS, which will be written by BLADE series writer David Goyer.
Ever since they remade TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and made money off of it, studios have been pimping classic horror movies for the remake train with a vengeance, and fans of the originals have been complaining and pleading for them to stop. And guess what? They haven’t stopped. They just keep remaking. So complaining about what a dumb idea this is will do no good. So I won’t.
Dimension is aiming for an early 2008 start date, once Bousman has completed SAW IV and his rock opera REPO for Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate. Though the script is yet to be written, the themes of telepathic abilities, paranoia and the manipulation of stem cell research will be even more present, as according to producers, these themes make the whole concept of turning telepathic abilities into lethal weapons even that much more plausible today. Right.
I have some hope here with Bousman and Goyer on board to bring it to life, but I’m not sure even their talents have what it takes to up-show what Cronenberg did with the original.
