Scary Movie fans are in for a treat. Not only will the spoof franchise return this summer after more than a decade away, but it will come a little early. Following the debut of the first trailer, Marlon Wayans took to Instagram to announce that the release of Scary Movie has been bumped up. The film was previously slated to hit theaters on June 12, but is now set to release on June 5.

Marlon Wayans on Scary Movie Release

We are currently in the edit for Scary Movie,” Wayans wrote. “The bad news is, we’re no longer going to be releasing on June 12. The good news is, due to the overwhelming response and the worldwide excitement, we are releasing a week earlier. That’s right: June 5th is the new date for Scary Movie! We’re starting off the summer with a bang and a laugh fest. So I’m really excited about coming early.

This new date will put the film up against Masters of the Universe.

In addition to starring in the new sequel, Marlon Wayans is also a writer and producer. The rest of the cast includes Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, and Sydney Park.

What It’s About

The official synopsis reads: “Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (Ghostface), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (Shorty), Shawn Wayans (Ray), Anna Faris (Cindy), and Regina Hall (Brenda) reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every ‘final chapter’ that absolutely isn’t final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

No Safe Spaces

Marlon Wayans has said the sequel will return to the original’s roots, with no-holds-barred comedy. “It’s how we always do it. We just want to make everybody laugh, and we don’t care if you’re sensitive,” he said. “Even sensitive people need to laugh at themselves. Just know that we’re not just laughing at you, you get the chance to laugh at others. When we did White Chicks, we made fun of everybody. We made fun of Black people, we made fun of white people, we made fun of Hispanic people. That’s just what we do. We make fun of the world, make light of the world. It’s not to harm, it’s to bring humor. You may offend people here and there, but, hey, not every joke’s gonna land 100 percent, but if you tell a joke and 100 people laugh and one person walks out, that’s still a good joke.
