SCOOBY DOO is being rebooted for the big screen and apparently Warner Bros hasn’t learned to stay away from the CGI/live action mix that ruined the 2002 film. Well, maybe it wasn’t the abyssmal CGI animation rather than the awful direction from Raja Gosnell and the overly cheesy screenplay from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn. While Sony has elected to end their live action SMURFS franchise in favor of a more fitting fully animated reboot, Warner Bros is going to reboot to live action once again according to Deadline.
There are no directing or casting announcements at this time, only the inclusion of Randall Green as screenwriter. SCOOBY DOO had two theatrical films made, the last being released in 2005, as well as two direct to home video movies without any of the theatrical cast that included Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Linda Cardellini. SCOOBY DOO has been rebooted as an animated series for decades and continues to release animated films direct to DVD regularly.
There is definitely the possibility this time SCOOBY DOO may be worth seeing, but until studios find a better way to animate these classic characters without the result looking like ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS or YOGI BEAR, we can just assume they will be garbage.
