This is kind of funny – it looks like Scott Derrickson and Sam Raimi are swapping projects. Back in January it was announced that Derrickson would not be directing the DOCTOR STRANGE sequel DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, stepping away over "creative differences". One month later, we caught word that Sam Raimi was in talks to replace Derrickson at the helm of that film.
Now it has been announced that Derrickson has signed on to direct BERMUDA for Skydance Productions, a project that Raimi was attached to for at least a year and a half.
When Raimi was involved, we heard the following synopsis:
When a massive submarine carry nuclear weapons goes missing in the Bermuda Triangle, Commander Vogel enlists the help of Dr. Fisk, a theoretical physicist, who while using his grandfather’s research opens a wormhole to reveal a mysterious island that is inhabited by anything lost in the triangle including Sharks, Vikings, and Nazis, in the hopes of finding the nuclear weapons.
The Derrickson announcement only says that the story is
set in the mysterious patch of the Caribbean where planes and ships have gone missing over the years.
The initial script was written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, and subsequent drafts have been written by John Gatniss and the writing duo of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Now Derrickson will be doing his own rewrite with C. Robert Cargill.
A couple years ago, Ryan Reynolds was rumored to be in the running for the lead role in BERMUDA. Reynolds didn't sign on, so now Chris Evans is considering taking the lead. So we could be seeing the director of DOCTOR STRANGE team up with Captain America for this one.
Derrickson will be executive producing the film, which is being produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Bonnie Curtis, and Julie Lynn.
