As David Fincher fastidiously edits his take on THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO…working toward a December release, his writing partner on 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, Scott Z. Burns, awaits the release of his new film CONTAGION next month. Shouldn’t be long before the two reunite and plunge into the murky waters…
On the subject, Burns recently caught up with Cinema Blend and shed a little light on the deep-sea epic. Check it:
Confirming the project is indeed “very big” in scope, it will also bear “very little” resemblance to a traditional novel adaptation, as Burns says his job “isn’t to turn a book into a movie, it’s to be inspired by the book and then go write a movie.”
About the new direction they’ll take, Burns continues with:
“David and I had a really cool idea for the relationship between Nemo, and Aronnax and Land…that’s really what we kind of got into. But I think it’s very, very true to the spirit of the book.”
Not sure how much it’ll pertain, but here’s the synopsis of the 1954 film version of 20,000 LEAGUES: The oceans during the late 1860-92s are no longer safe; many ships have been lost. Sailors have returned to port with stories of a vicious narwhal (a giant whale with a long horn) which sinks their ships. A naturalist, Professor (Pierre) Aronnax, his assistant, Conseil, and a professional whaler, Ned Land, join an US expedition which attempts to unravel the mystery.
