Seems like The New Mutants theatrical release won’t be delayed! Imax Poster!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Variety reports that Disney and 20th Century Fox are keeping steadfast on THE NEW MUTANTS' August 28th release date (see the new IMAX POSTER below). Not only is this surprising – considering the rise of Covid cases around the world (especially the US) – but also the fact that there aren't many theaters open to begin with. According to the article, only 1,309 of the 6,021 venues in the country have reopened (and none in New York or Los Angeles), meaning it's unclear how many people would even be able to watch the film in theaters, even if they felt safe to.

However, it's speculated that there was a mandate to release the film theatrically, per the situplations of Disney's acquisition of Fox's film assets. So the fact that the studio is keeping the release date – despite the issues of the pandemic and lack of open theaters – could just be Disney ripping the band-aid off and simply fulfilling their contractual obligation. Especially since Disney is planning on rebooting the X-MEN franchise anyway, and it was always unlikely THE NEW MUTANTS was going to be retconned into their current MCU plans.

Either way, we'll keep you update if there are any changes or delays.

Meanwhile, THE NEW MUTANTS is directed by Josh Boone and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Antonio Banderas. Here's the official synopsis:

Magik, Wolfsbane and other teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while staying at a secret facility.

So what do you guys think? Are you going to see THE NEW MUTANTS when it comes out in theater? Sound off below!
